Driver Loft Chart: What Loft Should You Actually Play

Ask a golfer why they play a 9-degree driver and the answer is usually some version of "I don't want to balloon it." That instinct is understandable and, for most golfers, wrong. Loft isn't the enemy of distance. For anyone swinging under about 105 mph, it's usually the missing ingredient.

Why low loft feels safe and isn't

A driver with too little loft doesn't fly lower and stronger. It launches too low to carry, no matter how solid the strike, and a shot that comes down early rolls out on a firm day or just dies short on a soft one.

The "pros play low loft" argument doesn't transfer either, and the numbers are closer than most golfers assume. Tour drivers mostly sit between 8 and 10.5 degrees, which is not the 7-degree cannon the myth implies, and those are players swinging around 115 mph. At that speed a lower loft keeps spin inside a useful window instead of ballooning. Take the same head to a 90 mph swing and there's no longer enough speed to get the ball up at all, so the loft that looks professional just leaves distance on the table while feeling "controlled."

Two things push you off this chart in either direction: attack angle and current miss.

Attack angle is whether you're hitting down on the ball or up through it at impact. A steep, downward attack angle kills launch and needs more loft to compensate. An upward attack angle (hitting the ball on the way up, which most good drivers of the ball actually do) launches naturally higher and can get away with less loft than the speed chart alone suggests.

Current miss is the simpler tell. If your typical bad drive balloons — goes high, spins out, and comes up short even when you catch it — you're already carrying more loft (real or effective, from an open face) than you need; move down. If your miss is a low, boring shot that never gets airborne, you need more loft, not less, even if that number feels uncomfortably high for your ego.

The number on the club isn't the real number

Stamped loft and effective loft are not the same thing. A driver face pointed even slightly open at impact adds loft to the shot; closed, it subtracts. A shaft that's too soft for your tempo can add several degrees of dynamic loft through impact that never shows up on the spec sheet. Two golfers gaming the "same" 10.5-degree driver can launch the ball at completely different angles, because the stamped number is a manufacturing spec, not a promise about what happens at the ball.

Start here, then let ball flight correct you

The chart gets you in the right window. Attack angle and your current miss tell you which side of that window you're on. A launch monitor removes the guessing entirely, and it's worth doing if you have access to one.
